Pi Phi Lunch at Nico's is tomorrow!

Hi Angels,
We are going to lunch on Jan.31st at Nico's, on the corner of Friendly and Elm at 12:30, I have reserved a room in the back of the restaurant. I stopped by and picked up a menu and it looks good. Parking is available in the lot next to Center Port Condos or in t he parking garage, both across from Center City Park. Let's all come! Remember to bring your underwear. Not a reminder I am used to writing. We plan to get a picture of the undies strung on a clothesline to send into The Arrow.

Let's all come. I'll make a reservation toward the end of next week, so let me hear.

Treasurers Report:
$220.15 was raised from the fundraiser. We want to thank Kim and Jean Ann for our most successful fundraiser.
We have $452 in the treasury.
$50 will be given for underwear.
$32 left over for books

Carol will send a letter to Sandie about how we can help the NC State Pi Phi Chapter. We will wait to hear back .

Hi To All You Wonderful Sisters,
Leaves are beginning to turn, football seasons are in full swing, and it's time for Piedmont Pi Phi to begin a new year. Our Fall Welcome Meeting will be October 6, 7:00 P.M.at Betsy Bullard's home, 4106 Westmount Dr. It will be so good to be together again and we especially want to welcome our new members, Bree, Colleen, Holly, Monique and Rachael. We will begin with lots of goodies so have a light dinner. Our activities for the coming year will be presented and as is customary, we will bring toilitries for Sanctuary House (small size, a good use for hotel items) I will be glad to give directions to anyone who needs them. Please let me hear when you can. I'm hoping all will be able to come

News from the board meeting...

The board met a Carol Carpenter’s home at 7:00pm on September 15, 2011. Those present were Carol Carpenter, Amy Callaghan, Betsy Bullard, Joy McCoy, Kim Pyle, Rae Lynn Wahl.

Joy thanked everyone for making the Back to School Drive a success. We provided school supplies to 44 children.

Our first meeting will be October 6, 7:00pm at the home of Betsy Bullard. Please bring toiletries for Sanctuary House and chapter books for Grades K-3.

Our December 6th meeting will be held at Amy Callaghan’s home. We will make cards for the fundraiser. Dr. Seuss will be in March and the April meeting will be our Founders Day program.

The Barnes and Noble fundraiser will be the last Saturday before Christmas on 12/17.

Dues for the year are $35.00 with National receiving $25, local dues $12 and Angel Dues are anything above our regular dues.

Saturday, October 1 is the “Women’s Walk/Run” with proceeds going to Friends for Earlier Detection of Breast Cancer.

Joy is going to try and reorganize the Dr. Seuss party possibly at the Women’s Resource Center.

Piedmont Pi Phi’s will adopt NC State Pi Phi’s.

Once again, we are adopting a family for Christmas…

Just wanted to update you on plans for our Barnes and Noble Fundraiser, which will be Thursday, Dec. 17. Please note this change of date.

We will be wrapping gifts at Barnes and Noble, Friendly Center on Dec. 17 from 10am-9pm. We would like to have at least 2 Pi Phis available to wrap in each of the following time slots:
2 Volunteers

2pm-4pm
4pm-6pm
6pm-9pm

Dr. Seuss Party & Book Collection

Dear Piedmont Pi Phis,

Again this year we will be collecting chapter books for the children at the Salvation Army's Boys' and Girls' Club. Each child attending our Dr. Seuss party will be given a chapter book to take home. The tentative date of the party is Friday, February 26, 2010, but we need to be collecting books at every meeting. I have attached a list of chapter books to get you started. Lara Heberle and Rae Lynn Wahl are in charge of the party this year.

Did you know:
30 million adults and millions more children in this country are illiterate.
40% of the 4th graders in this country lack basic proficiency in reading.
School drop-outs earn less than 1/3 of the earnings of a college graduate.
Health costs for those without a high school degree are four times higher.
One fourth of those dropping out of school receive government assistance.
80% of prisoners did not finish high school.
Illiterate women are more likely to be in an abusive relationship.

I wanted to remind everyone to let Anne (asmith@jonathansmith.com) know by April 17th what you will be bringing to the Founders' Day dinner.

Cake:
Since we may need a big cake to accommodate a large crowd, we should probably order a cake from either Sam's Club or Costco. If you have a membership and can order and bring the cake to the party, let me know. (We'll reimburse you... so keep the receipt!)

We just had more fun than you can imagine at Chuck and Julie Clarks for Dinner and Fun. Chef Reto prepared dinner for us and we finished off with a current events quiz.

2009 Fraternity Day of Service.... Dr. Seuss Party!!

On February 27, the Piedmont Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club and the NC Gamma Pi Phis celebrated our 2009 Fraternity Day of Service by hosting a Dr. Seuss Party for children 6 - 8 years old from the Salvation Army’s Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Greensboro, NC. We decorated bookplates as Tieg, one of the WFU Pi Phis, read GREEN EGGS AND HAM, the first book she had ever read by herself. Our refreshments were green deviled eggs and ham rolls, along with a six layer "Cat in the Hat" cake and fish cookies. Then the children enjoyed playing games based on Dr. Seuss' books (Pin the Hat on the Cat, 1 Fish 2 Fish Bowl Toss and a Sneetch Beach Ball Game). At the end of the party, each child received a First Chapter Book to take home. They each also received a coloring book and a box of crayons and a bookplate, that they had decorated, for their own new book.

Please bring to the Beaux and Arrow at Julie Clark’s on February 8th a First Chapter Book for the children at the Salvation Army’s Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

For our National Day of Service on Friday, February 27, 2009, we are going to have our Dr. Seuss party at the Salvation Army Corps' Worship Center (located at 821 South Aycock Street) at 3 pm. Our goal is to give each child attending a book to take home. A critical factor in whether or not a child becomes a reader is access to books in the home.

I shopped for First Chapter Books at BOOK.A.MILLION. Series include: Fanny K. Stein for ages 7 – 10 ($4.99); Cam Jansen for ages 7 and up ($3.99); Junie B. Jones, reading level 2.1 – 2.7 ($4.99); Magic Tree House, reading level 2.2 and up ($3.99); books by J.C. Greenburg for reading level 2 – 3.2 ($3.99) and by Dan Gutman for 7 – 10 years ($3.99). The Intermediate Series include books by Beverly Cleary for ages 8 – 12 and by Geronimo Stilton for reading level 3, and The Secrets of Droon reading level 3, Beast Quest reading level 3, Captain Underpants for 7 – 10 years, Ricky Ricotta and Encyclopedia Brown for ages 7 and up. These are a few recommended as popular by a lady working there.

If you can’t make the dinner on the 8th, books can be dropped off at my house – 3525 Spicebush Trail. They can be left on a bench in my carport by the back door.

Summertime - Sleeping Booty Band Event

The Sleeping Booty Band is playing at the Grasshopper's ballpark on Friday night, June 20th (no game that night) a FUN show... especially if you like great 70s, 80s & 90s covers. It's a 13-member band with a full horn section.

Gate City Rotary club is putting on this party. It's a fundraiser. They are a major supporter of Espwa (orphanage in Haiti- see below) also support Camp Carefree and many other local organizations.

Tickets are only $85 (Raffle ticket for a restored '76 Triumph TR6, the show, drinks & chance to win). General admission is $15 Donations are accepted, as well.

We had such fun. What a wonderful time Joy cooked up for us at the Center of Hope. We laughed and enjoyed the children and everyone there. Betsy did a most wonderful job of reading the Cat in the Hat. She made it come alive in marvelous ways! AND THE CAKE. Lots of layers and lots of fun. Jonathan came along for the ride and all had just a terrific time. Thanks a million to Joy who made it possible and all who came bringing goody bags, books, and a lot of love.

March 2, 2008 Dr. Seuss Party at the Center of Hope Sunday, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

PARTY PLANS!
· Joy will bring a game, Pin the Hat on the Cat.
· Betsy will read the book, THE CAT IN THE HAT.
· Amy has 50 book plates to be colored.

These will go into books given by First Book. Amy will bring markers.
· I have two Dr. Seuss’ books to be given to the children.

We could always use books, not necessarily by Dr. Seuss.

It would be nice to have a book for each person coming to our party – even adults!
· I have 4 Dr. Seuss hats - We will take pictures for the ARROW!

WE NEED:
· Drinks & Ice
· 1 volunteer to bring some Cookies or brownies

Betsy plans to make a cake that looks like Dr. Seuss’ hat

· Several volunteers to bring some salty snacks like nuts, chips, etc
· Napkins, plates, forks & cups in Dr. Seuss colors yellow, red, black & white.
· Books for ALL AGES
Joy needs to know who can help with the party and what you would like to bring;

News From Wake Forest !!

Hi Ladies!

Anne Mcknight gave me your email addresses and I thought I would send you a little email introducing myself (and so that you have my email address. My name is Kelly Stroud and I am the president of Wake Forest's chapter of Pi Beta Phi (NC Gamma). I am a junior here and an Elementary Education major, Women & Gender Studies minor. Unfortunately, I'm almost done with my term, but one of my good friends, Chelsea Barefoot, will be taking over as president. I will certainly make sure you all can contact her, come January. NC Gamma is an amazing group of women. We currently have 135 active sisters, but many of our juniors are studying abroad! In the spring, we will be going through formal recruitment and we expect our numbers to rise to ~ 170.
I really look forward to meeting you all and working closely with the Greensboro ladies! I'd love to hear back from you all!

Back to School Book Drive for Center of Hope to Support Literacy
Literacy is Pi Beta Phi’s top priority!
This year, once again, our club will be supporting the children & families at Salvation Army’s Center of Hope.
At our meeting on October 25, we will collect books for all ages, school supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc.) and toiletries for the families at the Center of Hope.

We will learn more about Pi Phi’s partnership with First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with the mission of giving children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. The critical factor of whether or not a child becomes a reader is access to books in the home.

Did you know?
30,000,000 adults & millions more children in this country are illiterate
40% of 4th graders in this country lack basic proficiency in reading
School drop-outs earn less than 1/3 the earnings of a college graduate
Health costs for those lacking high school degree are four times higher
¼ of those dropping out of school receive government assistance
80% of prisoners did not finish high school
Illiterate women are likely to be in an abusive relationship
Together we can make a difference. Kyle Zimmer with First Book comments, "If we change one child at a time…we can change this country forever.”

Goals for this year:
We hope to have a “panty raid” for the children at the Center of Hope.
On March 2, our National Service Day

We plan to have a birthday party for Dr. Seuss at the Center of Hope.
